A striking blue-toned darkroom print from the late 1980s series False Start, photographed at Michael Joseph’s own swimming pool in Clapham, London.
Created in the darkroom and conceived entirely by the photographer, this image captures the dramatic moment when several nude women prepare to dive into the pool — except for one who leaves the water prematurely, before the starting whistle. The photograph was taken while the Playboy US television channel was filming Michael during the production of the series.
The cool inverted blue tonality enhances the sculptural quality of the figures and the theatrical tension of the scene. The composition freezes a moment of anticipation, disruption and movement, making it one of the most visually compelling works from the False Start session.
