Created from one of the original negatives from Michael Joseph’s celebrated Pool Ladies series, this unique cyanotype reimagines the original photograph through the incorporation of real fern fronds, placed directly onto the print during the cyanotype process.

The graphic silhouettes of the ferns seem to extend the architecture of the diving board, framing the swimmers like a natural stage set. Deep Prussian blues unite photography, botany and light in a composition where reality and imagination merge.

No two prints can ever be identical. Sunlight, cyanotype chemistry and the placement of the botanical elements combine to make every work completely unique.

This artwork is the result of a collaboration between Michael Joseph’s original photograph and Justine Joseph’s handcrafted printing process, creating a contemporary interpretation of an iconic image from the 1980s.
