Suspended in a field of molten, earthy tones, Swimming Opposite (Muddy Gold) presents two mirrored figures drifting in quiet symmetry. Eyes closed, arms extended, their bodies float in a shared stillness as water folds and fractures light across skin and surface.
The muted gold and olive palette lends the image a tactile warmth — less ethereal, more elemental. Ripples thicken into painterly textures, dissolving the boundary between body and current. The repetition of form creates a hypnotic rhythm, transforming a simple act of floating into a meditation on duality and reflection.
There is a grounded sensuality here — skin illuminated against darker depths, strength softened by buoyancy. The mirrored composition invites contemplation, drawing the viewer into a corridor of liquid light where intimacy and abstraction quietly converge.
Part of Michael Joseph’s continuing exploration of symmetry and water as sculptural medium, this variation shifts the emotional register through tone alone. The earthy palette introduces weight and atmosphere, offering a richer, more visceral interpretation of the original aquatic study.
Printed on aluminium, the layered hues gain depth and clarity, enhancing contrast while preserving the fluid softness of ripple and reflection. The smooth finish gives the piece a contemporary edge while maintaining its original expressive quality.
A refined and collectible work, presented in a small-format edition.
