A cooler, more sculptural interpretation of the mirrored composition, Swimming Opposite (Steel Blue) renders two floating figures in a restrained palette of indigo, slate, and silvery highlights. Aligned in inverse symmetry, their outstretched arms and gently tilted faces create a poised visual dialogue across the water’s surface.
The steel-blue tonality heightens the image’s graphic clarity. Light fractures into crisp reflections, tracing contours along shoulders and arms, while darker currents beneath the surface introduce depth and subtle movement. The water becomes both mirror and veil — simultaneously revealing and abstracting the bodies it carries.
Where warmer treatments evoke dreamlike softness, this version feels more architectural. The symmetry is pronounced, the contrast sharper, the atmosphere composed and contemplative. The figures appear suspended in a moment of equilibrium, neither advancing nor retreating, simply held within the cool geometry of light and liquid.
Created during the 1980s, when colour experimentation and stylised aquatic imagery shaped much commercial photography, this work reflects Michael Joseph’s instinct for exploring tonal variation within a single concept. It demonstrates how palette alone can shift mood — from romantic warmth to poised, modern precision.
Printed on aluminium, the steel blues and silver highlights gain heightened depth and luminosity. The sleek surface enhances contrast and fine detail, preserving the shimmering textures of water while lending the image a contemporary, gallery-ready finish.
