Created from one of Michael Joseph’s original negatives from his celebrated Pool Ladies series, this unique cyanotype captures the suspended moment just before the dive.

Reduced to deep Prussian blue silhouettes, the two swimmers appear to hover between presence and abstraction. Their outlines dissolve through the unpredictable chemistry of the cyanotype process, as sunlight, chemistry and chance reinterpret the original negative. What was once an advertising photograph becomes an almost timeless image, evoking memory more than reality.

Like every cyanotype in this collection, no detail can ever be reproduced exactly. The subtle tonal variations, rich textures and gentle irregularities inherent to this historic photographic process give the work its completely unique character.

Each print is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Michael Joseph’s photographic vision and Justine Joseph’s handcrafted printing process, reinterpreting the family archive through one of photography’s oldest techniques.
