NIVEA – FRONTAL, FRAMED “BRUSHSTROKE” CYANOTYPE
Unique cyanotype made from an original Michael Joseph negative
Original photograph: London, 1980s
Hand-printed in the Dordogne by Justine Joseph, 2026
Presented in a brushed-aluminium-effect frame, ready to hang
Created from an original Michael Joseph negative from the celebrated Nivea “Now in Tubs” photo shoot, this unique cyanotype offers a contemporary reinterpretation of one of the series’ most striking images.
The figure emerges through rich Prussian blues, luminous whites and softer tonal variations. Deliberately visible brushstrokes, irregular edges and variations in density reveal the handmade process, placing the work somewhere between photography, painting and experimental printmaking.
Each cyanotype is entirely unique: light, chemistry, paper and hand-applied emulsion create textures and imperfections that cannot be reproduced exactly.
The work brings together two generations — Michael Joseph’s original photography and Justine Joseph’s contemporary reinterpretation of his archive.
Presented framed and ready to hang. The reverse includes a photograph of Michael Joseph and a handwritten inscription identifying the work, adding to its provenance.
