Suspended in cool, luminous blue, Swimming Opposite (Blue) captures two mirrored figures drifting in serene symmetry. Eyes closed, arms extended, their bodies float in quiet surrender as light fractures across the water’s surface, dissolving contours into liquid abstraction.
The composition creates a gentle visual echo — reflection answering reflection — blurring the boundary between body and ripple. The cool palette intensifies the sense of calm while subtly heightening the sensuality of exposed skin beneath shifting light. Strength softens into weightlessness; movement becomes meditation.
There is intimacy in the stillness, a shared rhythm between the figures that feels both poised and dreamlike. The water becomes a sculptural medium, shaping and refracting the form into something at once athletic, vulnerable, and poetic.
Contextual Note
Part of Michael Joseph’s exploration of symmetry, reflection, and the human form in motion, this work transforms a fleeting aquatic moment into a study of balance and quiet sensuality. The mirrored composition invites contemplation, while the tonal restraint anchors the image in elegance rather than spectacle.
Printed on aluminium, the cool blue tones gain depth and clarity, enhancing the interplay of light, grain, and ripple. The smooth surface gives the piece a contemporary finish while preserving its original atmosphere.
