Anecdote taken from an article about my father in Pic Magazine (published June 1990): “It was my first ‘orgy’ — Tiddlywinks for Whitbread. Even their budgets had to be taken into account, so we placed an advertisement in the Evening Standard for the job and more than 500 people responded. We selected 25 students, each of whom was paid £25 for the day. I was incredibly pleased with the result, even though it was never used by Whitbread. The client was anxious that parents would worry their children at university were drinking and gambling instead of studying. As is often the case with experimental work, this was disappointing, as it is usually more spontaneous and more fun than heavily researched advertising. It gives the client an idea, and then they go off and do something completely different.”
